FIELD: mechanical engineering; hardening of piston ring groove zones by electron-beam surfacing in vacuum. SUBSTANCE: material of piston blank on ring groove zone to be hardened is melted in vacuum by electron beam with adding of addition material into molten material of piston. Copper is used as addition material in amount of 1.5 - 2.0 % of piston molten material required to form ring groove in hardened, zone, or NiCr alloy is used in amount of 3.5 - 4.0 % of indicated amount of piston molten material. In this case piston is made of hypereutectic Silumin alloy. Use of one- or two-component composition of addition material reduces labour input in process of hardening. EFFECT: increased service life and operation reliability of piston owing to increased hardness of materials in zones of ring groove walls subjected to electron beam surfacing. 1 tbl, 1 ex
