FIELD: mechanical engineering; trouble shooting of automobile internal combustion piston engines. SUBSTANCE: according to proposed method, intensity of optical radiation generated in engine cylinders at combustion of fuel mixture is recorded, values of radiation intensity synchronized with angles of crank-shaft rotation are compared with reference threshold values corresponding to conditions of fuel combustion in cylinders of sound and regulated engine, and by results of comparison, coded signal is formed which is compared with set of coded signals corresponding to different types of engine faults. If one of coded signals coincides with one of signals from the set, fault is defined. Recording of intensity of optical radiation can be done in one of several preset spectral ranges. EFFECT: possibility of troubles accompanied by changes of intensity of radiation in different sections of spectrum. 2 cl, 3 dwg
