FIELD: railway transport; track maintenance and repair machines. SUBSTANCE: to implement proposed method machine 1 is used which has frame 4 with running mechanisms 3 and consists of first and second frame parts 6, and 8, respectively. Longitudinal gradient meter 28 is mounted on first frame part 6 in direction of operation for recording longitudinal gradient of rail track, and also displacement metering device 40 and control device 27. Laser base system 24 is mounted on second frame part 8 and is designed for setting height of working sets 9. System consists of laser transmitter 25 with adjuster 30 for relative re-positioning of base plane 29 and laser receivers 26. Control device 27 serves to transmit value of longitudinal gradient measured by longitudinal gradient meter 28, with shifting in time and depending on conditions of movement, into adjuster 30 of laser transmitter 25 for setting base plane 29 depending on recorded longitudinal gradient.
