FIELD: radioactive material handling. SUBSTANCE: container holding spent nuclear fuel has tight cover isolating inner space of container and built up of at least two detachable safety covers mounted one above other to form sealing loops together with case so that cavities are organized; each cavity has channel communicating with tightness checking device. Blind hole provided on external side of case is tightly closed with additional detachable cover to form additional cavity under it that communicates with mentioned channels. Additional cover and case form sealing loops to organize one more cavity provided with channel for communicating with tightness checking device. Additional cover has additional branched-off channel to ensure communication between additional cavity and tightness check device. As an alternative, case may be provided with two externally regulated sealing channels mounted in additional cover. First of these channels is installed at end section of mentioned additional channel facing additional cavity. Additional cover incorporates first test gas (such as helium) chamber communicating through second externally regulated sealing channel with other section of additional channel. Such mechanical design of container provides for checking its tightness when filled with spent nuclear fuel without removing external safety cover. EFFECT: improved radiation safety. 2 cl, 1 dwg
