FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing gel-free 1,4-cis-polybutadiene by polymerization of butadiene-1,3 in aliphatic solvent acted upon by catalyst comprising cobalt compound, alkylaluminium chloride and water. Catalyst is formed in toluene solution containing up to 0.033 % of H2O and 0.3- 0.5% of butadiene-1,3 by addition thereto of toluene solutions of cobalt compound and alkylaluminium chloride at 8-30 C and followed by further reaction at 3.0-25 C and addition of catalyst to monomer solution cooled to - 8-30 C in aliphatic hydrocarbon at water concentration (up to 0.006 wt %) lower than in saturated solution of aliphatic hydrocarbon. EFFECT: method uses diluted, unsaturated solutions of water in hydrocarbon solvents. 1 tbl
