FIELD: study of materials with use of ultrasonic oscillations, detection of flaws in welds. SUBSTANCE: ultrasonic converter has first and second prisms with piezoelements anchored on them and arranged at specified distance. Third piezoelement is mounted on second prism in opposition to first piezoelement and is connected via tuner to provide for adjustment of amplitude of pulse of acoustic contact with angle of input of ultrasonic waves emitted by it α3= aectg[b/2H] where H is thickness of article; b is distance between points of input of ultrasonic waves from first and second piezoelements. Points of input of ultrasonic waves from second and third piezoelements coincide and R3= R2, R3= R1 where R1,R2,R3 are zones of crossing of radiation patterns of first, second and third piezoelements with working surface of converter; is zone of crossing of radiation pattern of third piezoelement with surface of article under first prism with propagation of ultrasonic waves from third piezoelement and their reflection from bottom of article in direction to first piezoelement. In addition tac± Δt ≠ tf, where tac is time of arrival of pulse of acoustic contact; tf is time of arrival of pulse from flaw; Δt is length of pulse.
