SUBSTANCE: described are new compounds of formula I: wherein R¹ is mercapto, acetylthio, carboxy, hydroxycarbamoyl, N- hydroxyformylamino, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, aralkoxycarbonyl, benzyloxycarbanoyl or group of formula II: wherein R⁶ is aryl or heteroaryl; R² is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, heterocycloalkyl or heteroaryl; R³ is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or heteroaralkyl; R⁷ is aryl, heteroaryl or heterocycloalkyl; X is group of formula: (CH₂)_m-Y-(CH₂)_n wherein Y is 0, S or single bond, m is integer of 0 to 4, n integer of 0 to 4, and m+n is integer of 0 to 4, P is integer of 0 to 4 provided that R²-X is biphenylalkyl when p is not 0, and R²-X is not alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkylalkyl it p is 0 and R⁷ is phenyl, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. Carboxamides of formula I are activity inhibitors of matrix metalloproteases and are useful for treating pathogenic states in mammals.
