FIELD: rolled stock production, possibly exploitation of rolls of mills for cold and hot rolling. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of initial exploitation of roll in stand, after predetermined number of regrinding operations subjecting roll to preventive turning in lathe, then again exploiting roll; after 1-5 turning operations realizing heat treatment of roll instead of next turning. Heat treatment of roll comprises steps of heating roll at rate no more than 45 C/h until temperature 350-450 C, soaking it for 2-20 h and cooling at rate no more than 45 C/h. EFFECT: enhanced strength of roll due to reduced quantity of its contact-fatigue defects and lowered number of planned preventive regrinding. 3 cl, 3 ex
