FIELD: machining of metals. SUBSTANCE: process of electrochemical smoothing of metal articles includes immersion of machined article into aqueous solution of electrolyte and application of voltage positive with reference to electrolyte under which action steam and gas layer is formed between surface of machined article and electrolyte. Given process of electrochemical smoothing is implemented in two stages. At first stage electric voltage of 90-190 V is applied to machined article and article is cured under this voltage in the course of 0.1-5.0 s. At second stage voltage is raised to 200-400 V and is maintained constant till finish of smoothing process. Uninterrupted supply of voltage is provided at each stage of electrochemical smoothing, moment of transfer from first to second stage included. Aqueous solution of salts whose value of pH is within limits of 4-9 is utilized for realization of process. Aqueous solutions of electrolytes containing salts of borhydrofluoric, fluorosilicic, hexafluorotitanium or hydrofluoric acids are used for smoothing of articles from titanium and titanium alloys, for zirconium or zirconium alloys.
