FIELD: railway transport. SUBSTANCE: invention is aimed by providing maintenance of preset temperature in diesel locomotive water system with locomotive kept in stall at below-zero temperatures. According to proposed method of heating of diesel locomotive water system by periodically starting the engine shutting down of diesel engine is does at one and the same preset temperature of water system element featuring highest heat capacity. Diesel engine is cut into operation at preset cooling temperature of this element or at minimum tolerable temperature of water system element featuring lowest heat capacity. All elements of water system intermediate heat capacity are safe against inadmissible temperature drop. Device for heating water system of diesel locomotive has diesel engine, traction generator, auxiliary generator, storage battery and diesel engine start/stop system, two thermal relays, auxiliary generator excitation control unit, unit to control self-contained operation of diesel engine on fuel and automatic two-position water temperature controller in system. One thermal relay in installed on system element with highest heat capacity, and the other, on system element with lowest heat capacity. Outputs of both thermal relays, auxiliary generator excitation control unit and diesel engine self-contained operation control unit are coupled with input of automatic two-position water temperature controller. Output of temperature controller is connected to input of diesel engine start/stop system of diesel locomotive interacting with traction generator. Output of diesel generator is coupled with input of diesel engine self-contained operation on fuel. Auxiliary generator is connected to excitation control unit of auxiliary generator.
