FIELD: optics. SUBSTANCE: single-mode optical fiber has profile of refractive index of core composed of four parts as minimum. Key criteria of structure of core lie in presence of at least two non-adjacent parts of profile of core with positive relative refractory index Δ% and of at least two non- adjacent parts with negative relative refractory index Δ%. New design of core of waveguide provides for formation of single- mode optical fiber for communication systems of large extent, high data transmission speed and large distance between regenerators which include optical amplifiers. Structure of core of optical fiber makes it feasible to manufacture optical fibers with controllable dispersion and effective area exceeding 60 μm2.
