FIELD: optical industry. SUBSTANCE: optical fiber varying constantly along length thereof is made by introduction of some cylindrical tablets into covering glass tube and applying glass particles onto said tube. Each tablet has core and optionally glass coating layer. Tables are capable of forming optical fiber areas having different optical properties. Prior to compacting glass particles, stream of chlorine is allowed to pass through tube and over tablet surface. As soon as tube starts to be sintered. Stream of chlorine is discontinued and sintering particles build up internally directed force which makes tube fuse on tablets which are simultaneously sintered with each other. The resulting semiproduct is stretched to form optical fiber with low losses. This method is especially useful for preparing dispersible controllable single-mode optical fibers. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 31 cl, 13 dwg
