FIELD: ferrous metallurgy, namely, processes for cooling continuously cast billets in curvilinear type casting machines. SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of feeding metal to mold, drawing billet out of it, cooling billet in cooling zones. Water flowrate in different cooling zones is determined according to expression F=(k1i H + k2i V +k3i T1 +k4i T2 + k5i), where F is total consumption of water fed onto surface of billet in cooling zones at side of large and small radiuses, cu.m/h; i is index indicating number of secondary cooling zone; kij - (k1i - k5i) is empiric coefficients different for large and small radiuses depending upon percentage content of chemical elements in steel and determined according to formula where aij, bij,cij, dij, eij is empirical coefficients; [C],[Si],[Mn],[Al] is content of carbon, silicium, manganese and aluminium, %; N is quantity of cooling zones; H is billet width, m; V is billet drawing speed, m/min; T1 is temperature of billet at outlet of last cooling zone, C; T2 is temperature of metal in intermediate ladle, C. Method allows without changing structure of operating machine to select cooling mode of continuously cast billet in such a way that to provide predetermined temperature of billet surface at outlet of last cooling zone and uniform cooling of billet surface along its metallurgical length.
