FIELD: mechanical engineering; plants at varying volumetric flow of hot gases in internal combustion engines in particular for recovery and accumulation of waste gas heat. SUBSTANCE: device has heat-insulated housing with inlet and outlet branch pipes for hot and cold heat- transfer agent; housing is provided with partition dividing it into two unequal parts; device is also provided with hot gas supply manifold whose one branch pipe supplies gases to left-hand part and other branch pipe supplies gases to right-hand part; branch pipe has additional gas exhaust pipe line separated by self-adjusting damper which makes it possible of retaining required rate of motion of gases and consequently retaining heat-transfer factor with no change in heat-exchange surface. Depending on flow rate of gases and back pressure at recovery unit, self-adjusting damper changes direction of motion of gases; as a result, device operates as single- pass or double-pass heat exchanger.
