FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: method is carried out by catalytically reducing mixture containing xylose and xylonic acid. Mixture is prepared either from sulfite cooking liquor and concentrated with respect to xylonic acid or from waste resulting from crystallization of xylose. The resulting mixture is reduced at temperatures from 80 to 130 C and pressures from 10.000 to 13.000 KPa in the presence of catalyst and metal hydride reagent. Catalyst is Ru, Pd, Ni-Raney or Rh, and metal hydride reagent is sodium boron hydride. Xylite is separated from reduced mixture by crystallization or chromatography. EFFECT: improved method of preparing xylite from sulfite cooking liquor or from wood technology waste. 18 cl, 20 ex, 9 tbl
