FIELD: preparation of xylite. SUBSTANCE: method is carried out by separating xylonic acid from material containing xylene and xylonic acid and which is essentially cooking liquor of sulfite cooking. Xylose is separated and crystallized. Xylonic acid is separated and reduced to xylite. Reduction is carried out at temperatures from 70 to 150 C, pressures from 10.000 to 13.000 KPa in the pressure of catalyst which includes Ru, Pd, Pt, Rh and Ni-Raney based compounds and sodium boron hydride as metal hydride reagent Xylite is isolated by chromatography or by crystallization. EFFECT: preparation of xylite with high yield from sulfite cooking liquor. 41 cl, 11 tbl
