FIELD: nuclear engineering. SUBSTANCE: first wall has cooled panel joined by diffusion welding to beryllium shield whose external side is provided with relatively perpendicular slots which sectionalize the shield. Opposite side of shield bears slots coaxial to those on external side and equal to the former in width. Bridge is provided between slot bases; depth of slots on underside of shield equals rounded radius of slot base. Such design enables concentration of thermal stresses due to effect of plasma in bridges isolated from cooled panel and not on shield mass, provides for compensation of stresses and for preventing fatigue cracks in first-wall material.
