FIELD: railway transport; track facilities; permanent way. SUBSTANCE: according to proposed method, ends of ties are compressed, through holes are made in ends pair of wedges are driven in and fastened in holes, wedges being joined in longitudinal plane. Holes are made rectilinear in cross-section and tapering to middle in longitudinal section. Joining plane is located across wood fibers of tie. Device for preventing cracking of ties has conveyor, position locks and mechanisms for compressing ties in each position. Hole making mechanism is arranged in first position and bracing wedge mounting mechanism is arranged in second position. Hole making mechanism is made in form of punches turned towards each other. Punches are trough-shaped, with sharpened end faces and internal cross steps. Brace mounting mechanism is made in form of pushers with flat end face installed on cylinder rods. Flat end face suits the shape of bracing wedge end face. Bracing wedge feed mechanism can be made in form of walking conveyor or stationary bin.
