FIELD: charging storage batteries. SUBSTANCE: method involves charging battery with regulated dc current, monitoring degree of battery charge, and reclosure of dc current circuit in case of insufficient charge. Monitoring degree of charge includes measurement of relaxation voltage across switch contacts immediately after its turning-on and evaluation of at least one of relaxation voltage parameters such as polarity and first pulse magnitude. Charging system has computer and M functional modules interconnected through common address and data bus; each module is provided with main and stand-by power supplies; system also has controller, analog-to-digital converter, and 1 to J charging-switching units with current regulators and switches for connecting charging cells and light indicators, all of them being interconnected by means of their local address and data bus. Computer functions to check degree of battery charge by monitoring relaxation voltage across switch leads. EFFECT: optimized rate of charge, enhanced efficiency and reliability of battery check-up for condition and its charging process control. 5 cl, 3 dwg
