FIELD: hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalysts. SUBSTANCE: alumina- supported catalyst containing 20-50% nickel and 10-30% chromium(III) oxide is characterized by that support includes at least one compound of element selected from K, Na, Si, Fe, and Ca in amounts 0.001-0.5 wt.% on conversion to oxides. Catalyst is prepared by mixing nickel, chromium, and aluminum compounds followed by drying, calcination, and reduction. In particular, nitric acid with acid modulus 0.05-1.0 is added to hydrated alumina Al2O3•n H2O, wherein 1.1≤n≤2.0, containing 0.001 to 0.5 wt.% of above-defined element, in amounts of 0.05-1.0 mole nitric acid per 1 mole alumina, after which nickel and chromium compounds are added.
