FIELD: agricultural engineering. SUBSTANCE: apparatus has lower traverse, guides, upper traverse, upper movable die, lower die, compression chamber, and hydraulic drives for compression chamber and for upper die. Compression chamber is mounted for displacement on guides. Compression chamber is composed of two movably joined parts with hydraulic drives. Hydraulic drive for lower part is positioned with its base on upper traverse and is connected through movable rod to brackets of compression chamber lower part. Lower die is pivotally connected to lower traverse and is equipped with tilting mechanism. Hydraulic drives for movable parts of compression chamber are arranged in parallel with guides. Horizontal sections of compression chamber movable parts are made in the form of different size rings. Section area of internal part of compression chamber upper movable part is smaller than section area of lower movable part of compression chamber. Tilting mechanism is made in the form of lever and stop, which are mounted on pin. Stop is joined to lower face of lower die. Supporting area of lower die is equal to area of section of compression chamber lower part. Supporting area of upper movable die is smaller than section area of upper part of compression chamber by 10-20%. Apparatus provides baling of licorice root and rootstock into parallelepiped or cylindrical bales of 200 kg weight. Upon removal of bale from compression chamber, root density is at least 0.8-0.9 t/cu.m. Labor intensity is reduced by five times as compared to known apparatuses.
