SUBSTANCE: invention relates to agents protecting organic-origin materials against ignition and burning, in particular to intumescent coke-forming fire retardants, i.e. those expanding upon effect of heat and flame and manifesting heat-shielding properties toward underlying material layer. Invention provides single- component systems of intumescent coke-forming fire retardants based on polyhydroxycarboxylic acid salts prepared by oxidation of carbohydrates such as disaccharides and polysaccharides into corresponding polyhydroxycarboxylic acids followed by salification thereof with metal or ammonium cations. Method of preparing coke-forming fire retardants as well as method of fire-protective treatment of combustible substance and a method for extinguishing heat source are likewise proposed.
