FIELD: fire protection of metal articles.

SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in construction and other fields of technology to increase fire resistance of metal, particularly steel structures. According to the invention, a method for fire-retardant treatment of a metal surface includes applying an intumescent fire-retardant coating on the metal surface, containing 20–30 wt.% of an intumescent fire retardant, which is a mixture of products of liquid-phase oxidation of potato starch, obtained by passing an oxygen stream into an aqueous solution containing: potato starch 12–17 wt.%, sodium hydroxide 5–6.5 wt.%, copper sulphate 0.1–0.15 wt.% at temperature of 70–75 °C for 7–8 hours, followed by drying the mixture and grinding the dry residue to a particle size not exceeding 80 mcm in diameter.

EFFECT: application of coating on metal surface with thickness of 0.8–1.4 mm prevents heating of metal to critical temperature of 500 °C at action of open flame for at least 45–90 minutes.
