FIELD: metallurgy and mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: method involves heating and saturation in powder mixture comprising chrome-containing component, activator, and corundum; cooling; chrome-plating in powder mixture comprising chromium fluoride as chromium containing component, nickel iodide as nickel containing component, ammonium fluoride as activator, with said components being used in the following ratio, wt%: chromium fluoride 0.001-30; nickel iodide 0.001-2; ammonium fluoride 0.001-1; corundum 67-99.997. Heating and saturation procedures are carried out in ammonia atmosphere. Steel products are held in saturation mixture having temperature of 200-800 C during heating for 5-30 min, with following increasing of temperature to chrome-plating temperature. Before cooling of steel products, gaseous products are evacuated. Method allows chrome-plating process to be intensified by reduced time of processing in saturation mixture (by 1.6-2.7 times). EFFECT: improved quality of processed surface and provision for obtaining chrome-plated layer of substantial thickness on steel products. 1 tbl
