FIELD: manufacture and restoration of machine parts, namely methods for automatic electric arc surfacing of worn shafts, possibly in machine engineering for applying special alloys upon shaft journals. SUBSTANCE: method allows to apply surfaced layers with thickness 0.2 - 0.5 mm without losses caused by splashing of additive metal. Method comprises steps of preliminarily imparting to additive welding rod cone shape with apex angle equal to 2α.; orienting additive welding rod relative to part by angle α = 75 - 88 degrees and providing contact of generatrix of cone with generatrix of part; rotating additive rod in such a way that linear velocity vector of cone base of additive rod coincides by value and by direction with vector of linear velocity of part; heating surface of part by means of arc ignited between tungsten electrode and part; heating end portion of additive welding rod placed in zone of arc burning by means of said arc or by means of other source until its plastic state; realizing surfacing at such geometrical arrangement of members that plane normal relative to part axis at side of surface layer is tangent in projection on part to additive rod and electrode.
