FIELD: analysis of lubricating oils with alkaline additives. SUBSTANCE: sample of oil is taken and mixed with ethanol solution of 0.1 mole/cu dm of hydrochloric acid in presence of specified quantity of mixed indicator comprised of ethanol and toluene taken in volume ratio 3:7 and methyl red and methylene blue taken in volume ratio 1:1. Added quantity of ethanol solution of 0.1 mole/cu dm of hydrochloric acid sufficient for neutralization of minimally permissible alkaline number of this brand is determined by graduation table. Lubricating oil is of fine quality if its color is green and its quality is no good if it has violet color. EFFECT: accelerated and simplified method of analysis. 2 tbl
