FIELD: chemical and petrochemical industry, production of hydrogen, sorbents, carriers for catalysts, synthetic diamonds, oil refining processes. SUBSTANCE: aim is to reduce catalyst and use method of its preparation, providing simplification of catalyst preparation process and high degree purity of produced carbon material with fibrous structure with simultaneous decrease of particles mass within period of catalyst deactivation. Catalyst of hydrocarbons decomposition has metal nickel as active component and is distinguished by the fact, that active component is applied on base made fully ar partially of fibrous hydrocarbon on nickel-bearing catalyst. Nickel-bearing catalyst is produced by application of active component on porous base. The new thing is, that active component is being applied on fibrous carbon material, produced as a result of hydrocarbons decomposition on nickel-bearing catalyst using impregnation of fibrous carbon with water solution, that has at least salts of nickel; following drying, decomposition and reduction of compounds of nickel till metal state under temperature of 300 - 400 C. EFFECT: catalyst and method of its preparation allow to simplify catalyst production process and to obtain high degree of purity of produced carbon material of fibrous structure. 4 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl
