FIELD: operation of communication networks. SUBSTANCE: network has plurality of stations each being capable of transmitting and receiving data to transfer messages from calling stations to destination ones in most expedient way through intermediate stations. To this end each station selects one or more probable call channels to send probe signals to other stations. Probe signals incorporate data identifying equipped stations and include items enabling their connection to other stations. Other stations receiving probe signals respond directly or indirectly thereby demonstrating their availability as destination or intermediate stations to probing and other stations. Probing station estimates direct or indirect responses to identify other stations from the standpoint of optimal establishment of communications with them. EFFECT: enlarged functional capabilities. 30 cl, 7 dwg, 2 tbl
