FIELD: production of iron by means of direct reduction of iron oxides. SUBSTANCE: method incorporates steps of charging into oxidizing zone of furnace the initial raw material comprising iron oxide material and carbon- containing material. Oxidizing agent and fuel are supplied into oxidizing zone of furnace through oxidizing burners and burnt for heating initial raw material. In so doing gas with oxygen concentration of, at least, 25 mole percent is used as oxidizing agent. Heated up initial raw material is supplied from oxidizing zone into reducing zone of furnace. Oxidizing agent and fuel are supplied into reducing zone of furnace through oxidizing burners and burnt with generation of combustion reaction products including carbon monoxide. Direct reduction of iron is carried out owing to interaction of iron oxide material with carbon-containing material and carbon monoxide. In so doing gas with oxygen concentration of, at least, 25 mole percent is used as oxidizing agent. Oxidizing agent is supplied into furnace from each burners by two flows, one of which is the basic high-velocity flow of oxidizing agent, and the second flow is additional flow of oxidizing agent having lower velocity, than velocity of basic flow. EFFECT: invention allows amount of carbon monoxide released from furnace as well as amount of exhaust gas to be reduced with usage of lesser amount of fuel and burners. 6 cl, 1 dwg, 2 tbl _
