FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: the invention relates to production of granulated metal iron through reduction of raw mixture containing iron oxide and carbon-containing reducing agent, the raw mixture is processed in the thermal reduction furnace. The furnace is fitted with a movable bed. The raw mixture is loaded on the bed of furnace. Iron oxide from the raw mixture is reduced with the carbon-containing reducing agent by applying heat, which results in formation of metallic iron. Metallic iron is then melted and molten metal is coalesced to granulated metallic iron with the simultaneous separation of molten metal iron from slag formed as a by-product. Then the metallic iron is cooled and solidified. The thermal reduction stage includes the stage of regulation of atmospheric gas flow rate in the zone beginning at the final reduction stage of iron oxide and ending at the melting of metallic iron. The gas flow rate ranges from 0 to 5 metres per second.
EFFECT: production of granulated metallic iron with high concentration of C and low concentration of S.
