FIELD: polymer materials. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to technology of high- molecular compounds, especially to polymeric gels, and can be used in biotechnology as gel matrix for preparing chromatographic carriers. Water-based polymer composition for preparing macroporous agarose gel with pore size 10 to 1000 mcm contains agarose (1- 5%) and an additive (2-50%) selected from urea, N-methylurea, acetamide, guanidine hydrochloride, alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide, alkali metal or ammonium thiocyanate. Gel is prepared by dissolving ingredients in water, freezing resulting solution at temperature from -5 to -50 C for 1 to 24 h followed by unfreezing and subsequent washing of thus obtained macroporous agarose gel with water.
