FIELD: high-voltage measurement technology, automatics, relay protection. SUBSTANCE: in correspondence with method measuring alternating electric current or voltage polarized light signal is transmitted at least once through pickup changing polarization of light signal depending on measured value, light signal passed through pickup is divided into pair of mutually orthogonal linearly polarized components. Light signal is additionally split into second pair of orthogonal linearly polarized components different from first pair by angular orientation or phase shift. All components are converted to intensity-normalized electric signals I1,I2 and I3,I4 correspondingly and measurement signal M is formed on their basis with due account of orientation angle or phase shift between pairs. Device measuring alternating electric current or voltage incorporates optically coupled pickup changing polarization of light signal depending on measured value, means to input polarized light signal into pickup, means dividing polarized light signal into mutually orthogonal linearly polarized components, unit converting components to intensity- normalized electric signals and unit forming measurement signal for measured value and determining measured value by it.
