FIELD: preparation of refractory materials. SUBSTANCE: invention refers to melting processes of brucite starting material with carbonaceous addition in electric arc furnaces to win electrotechnical periclase utilized mainly as electrotechnical insulation for manufacture of tubular electric heaters. Process consists in melting of brucite starting material in presence of carbonaceous addition. Carbonaceous addition of 20-40 mm fraction in the amount of 6-12% of periclase mass is injected between electrodes during melting from its beginning to time moment amounting to 0.6- 0.8 of total time of melting. Such addition of carbonaceous material in the form of given fraction in the course of specified time ensures production of sufficient quantity of high-grade periclase with low content of iron oxide, even from second-rate brucite.
