FIELD: industrial organic synthesis. SUBSTANCE: hexafluoroethane and/or octafluoropropane, which may be used as blend- forming cooling agents, gas dielectrics, dry-etching reagents, semiconductive materials, and laser media, are produced via gas-phase reaction of pentafluoroethane, 1,1,1,2- tetrafluoroethane, and/or 1,1,2,2,3,3,3- hexafluoropropane at elevated temperature in presence of diluent, in particular nitrogen, hydrogen fluoride, tetrafluoromethane, or final fluorination product. Unreacted products and diluent are isolated and returned into synthesis stage. Synthesis is carried out in presence of metal catalyst, constituted by metals or bimetals from group IB, in particular copper and/or silver, and alloys from groups VIIIB and VIB, in particular nickel and chromium. Advantageously, nonpurified anodic fluorine gas formed in electrolysis of mixture KF+2HF and contained up to 10 wt % HF can be used for fluorination. EFFECT: increased productivity of process and lowered its economical characteristics. 2 cl, 1 tbl, 12 ex
