FIELD: chemical industry, more particularly preparation of ozone-safe coolants. SUBSTANCE: 1,1,1,2- tetrafluoroethane is prepared by fluorination of 1,1,1- trifluoroethane with variable valent metal fluoride in the presence of diluent. Diluent is unreacted 1,1,1- trifluoroethane, penta-or hexafluoroethane. Metal fluoride is uranium hexafluoride or cobalt trifluoride, 1,1,1-trifluoroethanol to uranium hexafluoride molar ratio is 1.0-3.0:1 and fluorination temperature is 380- 500 C. When cobalt fluoride is used, process temperature is 250-350 C, and load is 8-24 l/h of 1,1,1- trifluoroethane per 1 kg of solid fluorinating agent. EFFECT: increased yield of the final product and lower power consumption of the process. 3 cl, 8 ex
