FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: the invention is dealt with a method and a device for hardening of rails or, at least, heads of rails. Technical result is to obtain uniform distribution of structure longwise a rail in a cross-section of the rail and provision of high quality of a rail. For achievement of the technical result a rail being in an austenitic state of structure is straightened, positioned horizontally and fixed on its base flange coaxially with fixation of its bending. Keeping the fixation against a bending, a rail and-or at least a part of a cross-section of the rail is periodically intensively cooled from the temperature, that is above the point Ac3 of a rail alloy with provision of transformation of a austenitic structure into the necessary microstructure stable at the room temperature. The method is realized by a device containing a support made in form of a bearing structure with a length corresponding to the length of the rail, a high antibending moment and elements of positioning and or demountable clamping means for a rail installation. EFFECT: the invention allows to obtain the uniform distribution of a rail cross-section structure along its length with provision of high quality of the rail. 21 cl, 4 dwg
