FIELD: manufacture of steels in electric arc furnaces.

SUBSTANCE: bed for preparing electrode column for operation in electric arc furnace includes at least one flared tube arranged over floor level and mechanism for securing column to tube. Under floor level opposite relative to said tube hated chamber with gas burners is arranged; said chamber has in upper portion duct for discharging combustion products. Bed may have several tubes and single heated chamber having individual burner and arranged opposite relative to said tubes. Method for preparing electrode column comprises steps of storing vertically arranged column in bed and lengthening it due to adding at least one new electrode; storing column while blanketing and heating part of column arranged under floor level; providing raised electrode temperature as far apart from place of column mounting; rotating column relative to lengthwise axis periodically or continuously; water cooling from outside upper electrode part protruded over bed level; blanketing and heating column in neutral atmosphere.

EFFECT: lowered temperature drop along cross section of electrodes of column, reduced thermal cracking, slow rupture of electrodes.
