SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for preparing alkylene glycols and catalytic composition useful for preparing alkylene glycols. Method involves interaction of alkylene oxide of the general formula:

wherein R1-R4 represent hydrogen atom or optionally substituted alkyl group comprising from 1 to 6 carbon atoms with water: 1) in the presence of derivative of polycarboxylic acid as a catalyst comprising one or more carboxyl groups in molecular chain and one or more carboxylate groups wherein number of carboxyl groups in molecule is equal to number of carboxylate groups, and individual carboxyl and/or carboxylate groups are separated one of another in molecular chain by separating group consisting of at least one atom; or 2) in the presence of catalytic composition containing derivative of polycarboxylic acid comprising in molecular chain one or more carboxyl groups and one or some carboxylate groups wherein number of carboxyl groups in molecule at least equal to number of carboxylate groups, and individual carboxyl and/or carboxylate groups are separated one of another in molecular chain by separating group consisting of at least one atom. Derivative of polycarboxylic acid can be immobilized on a solid carrier. Method provides retaining the reaction selectivity without using large excess of water in elevating stability and resistance against catalyst swelling under rigid reaction conditions.
