FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to catalytic hydration of alkylene oxide to alkylene glycol using a solid (i.e. heterogeneous) catalyst based on an ion-exchange resin, containing polystyrene. Described is a method of producing alkylene glycol, involving: reaction of water and alkylene glycol in at least one reactor under alkylene glycol formation conditions, wherein said reactor contains a catalyst essentially consisting of a strongly basic ion-exchange resin containing polystyrene, which is cross-linked with divinyl benzene in amount ranging from about 2 wt % to about 10 wt %.
EFFECT: high degree of conversion and selectivity of alkylene oxide.
