FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of converting alkylene oxide into the corresponding alkylene glycol in the presence of carbon dioxide, water and a catalyst composition which contains a halide, methalate and macro-cyclic chelating compound. As a rule, the halide is an iodide selected from iodides of alkali metals, iodides of quaternary phosphonium and iodides of quaternary ammonium. The methalate is selected from a group of molybdates, vanadates and tungstates. The macro-cyclic chelating compound is a crown ether.
EFFECT: method is fast and enables to obtain alkylene glycols with high selectivity towards alkylene carbonate and high alkylene glycols.
