FIELD: metallurgical industry, in particular, processing of melts, for example, slugs.

SUBSTANCE: method involves forming structure and sizes of ready product by means of tumbling bodies placed in closed volume; withdrawing heat from melt and tumbling bodies by supplying water onto tumbling bodies or onto tumbling bodies and melt in an amount of 0.01-0.50 m³ per ton of melt under process; forming size of product by changing speed of tumbling bodies up to 1.5 m/s. Apparatus has melt receiving unit, cylindrical screen having horizontal axis of rotation and partly filled with tumbling bodies, water supply system and ready product unloading device. Screens are arranged on tightening bars in parallel with cylindrical screen end walls at variable pitch making 0.1-0.6 the minimal size of tumbling bodies. Tightening bars are equally spaced from one another by distance at least equal to width of melt receiving device, which is disposed above upper curved part of tumbling body motion path.

EFFECT: provision for processing of melts with different initial rheological properties.
