FIELD: air-alcohol fuel cells for mobile phones, notebooks, and the like.
SUBSTANCE: proposed fuel cell has case accommodating catalytically active liquid anode, catalytically active water-repelling gas-diffusion air cathode, and liquid alcohol-alkali mixture filling inner space of case to separate anode from cathode; water-repelling surface of cathode is facing air. Cathode surface facing alcohol-alkali mixture is coated with layer of polymer, such as polybenzimidazole, possessing OH- ion conductivity. Cathode catalyst is Fe, Ni, Co, Ru base non-platinum catalyst tolerant to alcohol. Alcohol-alkali mixture is mixture of 4M of KOH + 4M of alcohol; used as alcohol in alcohol-alkali mixture is methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, ethylene glycol, or glycerin. Ni/Ru catalyst on highly dispersed carbon carrier can be used as anode catalyst, Ni/Ru being in the form of nanoparticles. Ni/Ru catalyst produced by thermochemical synthesis on carbon black, electrical precipitation, chemical method, or mechanical mixing can be also used as anode catalyst. Silver or pyrolized polymers of N4 complexes on carbon carrier can be used as cathode catalyst. The latter may be mixed up with polybenzimidazol.
EFFECT: reduced cost and enhanced stability of fuel cell characteristics.
