METHOD FOR PALLIATIVE TREATMENT OF ESOPHAGEAL CANCER Russian patent published in 2005 - IPC

SUBSTANCE: the present innovation combines endoscopic intraluminal surgery and radiation therapy. Moreover, tumor's endoscopic argonoplasmic coagulation should be performed for 2-6 seances carried out at an interval of 4-5 d at the power of high-frequency current being 40-60 W. Duration of every application lasts not more than 5 sec. Then, 10-14 d later, it is necessary to fulfill brachytherapy at Iridium-192 source at activity of 5-10 Curie at trajectory length of source movement ranged 5-24 cm, pace of 5 mm and the depth of reference isodosage being 10 mm against the source by providing applicator's movement being above and below the tumor for 2-3 cm. Brachytherapy should be conducted for 3 seances at an interval of 7 d at single focal dosage (SFD) being 7 Gy, total focal dosage (TFD) being 21 Gy. The method enables to restore esophageal lumen that provides necessary conditions for carrying out high-dosage brachytherapy at minimal complications and possibility for peroral nutrition during the whole life of a patient.
