FIELD: production of highly volatile higher fluorides of multi-valent metals.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes fluorination of wastes: chips, fragments, substandard vanadium articles by element fluorine, distillation of vanadium pentafluoride thus formed and its condensation. Fluorination is performed at two stages: first fluorine is admitted to reactor to excessive pressure of 1.5-2.0 kPa and vanadium batch is held for an hour at temperature of 40-60°C; then reactor is heated to initial temperature of 180-200°C and chips are fluorinated by commercial fluorine containing 92-94 vol-% of fluorine, 4-6 vol-% of hydrogen fluoride; the remainder being inert admixtures. Vanadium pentafluoride thus formed is condensed at temperature of (-25)-(-30)°C into bottles-condensers which are held under rarefaction of 2.0-3.0 kPa for 2 h at temperature of (-25)-(-30)°C.
EFFECT: low cost of product; increased yield of finished product.
