FIELD: non-ferrous metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: electrolyzer for production of magnesium and chlorine has enclosure with lining, collecting cell and electrolytic compartments where cathodes with ribs and anodes with chlorine-removing ducts made in the form of alternating recesses and protrusions on outer surfaces of anodes are located. Some ribs on cathode on side of collecting cell are positioned opposite to recesses of anode, other ribs on cathode are placed opposite to protrusions on anode. Number of ribs on cathode located opposite to recesses on anode equals 0.15-0.25 of their total number. Recesses and/or protrusions of chlorine-removing ducts in anodes have trapezoidal shape. EFFECT: reduced loss of magnesium during electrolysis, raised output of magnesium and efficiency of electrolyzer, decreased specific energy consumption thanks to re-distribution of density of current over sections of cathode, organization of directional circulation of electrolyte and accelerated output of magnesium from electrolytic compartment. 2 cl, 1 dwg
