FIELD: production of non-ferrous metals such as magnesium by electrolysis of melt salts.
SUBSTANCE: process for electrolytic production of magnesium in flow line comprises steps of loading solid highly dehydrated chlorine-magnesium raw material into main apparatus; melting material in flow of recycled electrolyte; electrochemically refining at electric current intensity corresponding to that at electrolytic production of magnesium in electrolyzer; brightening prepared melt; pumping melt by means of circulation pumps; producing magnesium in electrolyzers of flow line; separating magnesium from electrolyte in separator; removing part of electrolyte as recycled one in main apparatus. Level of electrolyte in main apparatus is kept lower than level of electrolyte in separator for separating magnesium from electrolyte. Heating mode of main apparatus is controlled by changing electric current density of electrodes of main apparatus and(or) by changing inter-electrode distance. Flow line for electrolytic production of magnesium from highly dehydrated solid chlorine-magnesium raw material includes main apparatus in the form of lined vessel divided by means of partition by two chambers. First chamber is used for melting and electrochemically refining highly dehydrated solid chlorine-magnesium raw material. It is s provided with electrodes connected to main bus line and with branch pipe for loading chlorine-magnesium raw material. Second chamber is used for brightening electrolyte by removing solid impurities from it. Main apparatus also includes flow-through electrolyzers for producing magnesium connected in series to main bus line; metering pumps used for pumping electrolyte in flow line and arranged in main apparatus of flow line; separator for separating magnesium from electrolyte. All said units are connected with common hydrodynamic circuit by means of transporting ducts. Fixed cathodes of melting chamber of main apparatus of flow line are made of steel. Main apparatus is provided in addition with detachable section of electrodes to be connected with main bus line in parallel with electrode of melting chamber.
EFFECT: increased yield of magnesium by electric current, lowered labor consumption and graphite consumption.
