METHOD FOR DETECTING A SOURCE OF NEUTRON STREAM AND GAMMA RADIATION Russian patent published in 2007 - IPC G01T3/06 G01T1/202

Abstract RU 2300784 C2

FIELD: radiation monitoring technologies, possible use for finding and identifying sources of neutron and gamma radiation.

SUBSTANCE: method for detecting neutron and gamma radiation stream includes recording scintillation from by-flying neutrons by means of three position-sensitive detectors based on LBO-glass and BGO-scintillator, positioned one below the other in parallel planes. As devices for transforming light impulse to electric impulse, four p-i-n diodes are used, one of which is positioned on each one of four truncated sides of each scintillator at an angle of 90° to each other at different height. Scintillator coordinate in each detector is determined on basis of ratios of impulse amplitudes from all four p-i-n diodes of this detector, energy of dissipated neutron, when determining angular coordinates of neutron stream source, is determined by adding impulse amplitudes from all four p-i-n diodes of detector located on middle level relatively to neutron stream source, while energy of dissipated gamma-quantum, when determining angular coordinates of gamma-quanta source, is measured by adding impulse amplitudes from all four p-i-n diodes of detector, positioned on lower level relatively to gamma-quanta stream source.

EFFECT: increased angular resolution when detecting neutron stream source, possible detection with high energy and angular resolution of gamma radiation stream source, increased sensitivity to gamma quanta and to neutrons when background radiation is present.
