FIELD: tobacco industry, in particular, process for reducing the content of lignin and nitrogenous compounds in tobacco leaves and fibrous tobacco material including whole leaves, fragments, stems, finely ground fraction and strips, as well as leaves and stems of tobacco.

SUBSTANCE: method involves extracting tobacco material using aqueous solvent at temperature of 60-80 C during 0.5-2 hours for producing of aqueous extract of tobacco and tobacco fibrous fraction; separating aqueous extract of tobacco from tobacco fibrous fraction; providing contacting of tobacco fibrous fraction with solution containing hydrogen peroxide and alkaline metal hydroxide; separating tobacco fibrous fraction from solution. Processed tobacco may be exposed to further processing for producing of cigarettes and other smoking articles.

EFFECT: improved quality of tobacco material due to decreased content of nitrogenous compounds and lignin, and reduced damage to whole tobacco material.
