SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of digital elevation models, in particular, to the generation and implementation of access to elevations for the digital elevation models. The technical effect is efficient storage of elevation data attained by compressing the elevation data from the first digital elevation model (DEM) in order to generate first compressed elevation data; saving the first compressed elevation data in the storage device cell specified by the first index; and saving the first index. The reading of the compressed elevation model data includes the following stages: locating the first compressed digital elevation model data portion using the first index; decompressing the first compressed portion to retrieve the first elevation data for a single discrete point in the digital elevation model. The digital elevation model has a set of compressed portions including the first compressed portion; and the first index referencing the storage device cell with the first compressed portion.
EFFECT: enhanced storage of elevation data.
