FIELD: physics, measurement.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to controlling and measuring equipment and may be used to detect depth of location and distance to cable located in earth. Measurement of electromagnetic field intensity H1 is done on surface of earth at unknown distance "y" from cable, H2 - at known height "a2" above earth surface strictly vertically relative to the first point of measurement, H3 - at known height "a3" above earth surface strictly vertically relative to the first point of measurement. Distance "y" to cable and depth of cable location "h" is determined by the following ratios: . In this method three measurements are done, which makes it possible to define distance to cable in horizontal plane and depth of its location.

EFFECT: increased accuracy of measurement and reduction of time and labour expenses.
